Female Friendships

There is something about female friendships that feels like magic. The kind of magic that picks you up off the ground after a heartbreak, that reminds you of who you are when you forget, and that shows you what love looks like when it's patient, kind, and supportive.

The times when I felt the most at peace were when I was surrounded by the loving women in my life. From going out and having a drink with the girls to crying on the couch about why we are in our feels. One of the most healing moments was actually recently. I picked up one of my girl friends after an exhausting school day and we made a much needed pit stop to In-n-Out (btw I get a cheese burger with both types of onion, pickles, and chopped chilies - a game changer!). As always, we fell into our rhythm the usual chit chat, debrief, talking too loud, over sharing, all the good stuff. Back at her apartment, we settled down on the couch, let the conversation drift to our love lives. We cried - sad cry and laughing, cracking jokes kind of cry. Many tears were shed yet somehow in the middle of all that sadness there was something so deeply comforting about being understood. Because love isn't always grand gestures or a perfect fairytale. But sometimes, just two women crying on the couch understanding that we'll always be there for each other.

Men will never understand the pure joy of going to a cute coffee shop, ordering an overpriced latte and catching up. They'll never understand putting on the cutest outfit and taking 500 photos of each other and only choosing one to post. They'll never understand calling each other on a random day with "girl guess what" and having the most detailed, overshared debrief. And they'll definitely never understand the curiosity of asking about what lip combo someone is wearing. Because some things - like finding the perfect nude gloss - are a special love language of their own.
